Penn National celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2002 and continues to build upon its foundation of history and tradition that has made it a major force in the sports and entertainment market in Central Pennsylvania.
Penn National provides sports fans in Central Pennsylvania with the excitement and beauty of live thoroughbred racing. With the technological expansion of the industry through simulcasting, the track's racing program is also viewed by patrons across the nation and in several foreign countries on a daily basis.
On May 26, 1994, Penn National Gaming, Inc., parent company of Mountainview Thoroughbred Racing Association and Penn National Turf Club, Inc., issued $18 million of stock in a public offering. Penn National Gaming is now traded on the NASDAQ stock market under the symbol PENN.
Penn National, which was originally owned and built by a group of Central Pennsylvania civic leaders, opened its doors to a crowd of 10,686 racing enthusiasts on August 30, 1972. With only 100 racing dates allotted to the association, it was hard to build up a fan following before it became time to close for the season.
In 1973, Mountainview moved 100 racing dates from Pitt Park to Penn National. With the establishment of a year-round racing calendar and the passage that year of legislation allowing Sunday racing, Penn National was on its way.
The 31st running of the $50,000 Pennsylvania Governor's Cup Handicap and the second running of the $50,000 Jenny Wade Handicap shared top billing on the 2003 stakes schedule at Penn National Race Course.
Less than two lengths separated the top five finishers at the wire in the Governor's Cup that was run over five furlongs on the grass. Taking Risks Stable's Namequest got up in the final jump to hang a neck defeat on 8-5 betting favorite Take Achance On Me.
Conover Stable's Tangier Sound was never headed as she posted a handy victory in the Jenny Wade Handicap for fillies and mares. A full field contested the five-furlong turf sprint with Tangier Sound touring the soft grass course in :57.30.
Governor's Cup weekend also included the eighth annual Pennsylvania Governor's Cup charity golf tournament. For the fourth year in a row a new one-day record was established when more than $105,000 was raised to help support vital research being done by the Carlino Fund for IBD Research at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
David Cora and Harry Thompson, Jr. were the leading jockey and trainer, respectively, during Penn National's 2003 season.
Cora won his third consecutive local championship by riding 233 winners from 1,164 starters. His $1,445,368 in purses also led all jockeys. Thomas Clifton was second with 186 victories and Emilio Flores third with 171 wins.
Thompson's 172 winners and 809 starters led all trainers in both categories. Bruce Kravets was second with 140 victories and Jose Martinez saddled 120 first-place finishers. On the national scene Kravets finished the year seventh among all race-winning trainers in North America with 198 winners, one more than Thompson.
Over the years, the likes of Willie Shoemaker, Steve Cauthen, Angel Cordero, Jr. and Chris McCarron, have all ridden at the track. Penn National was also the home in 1979 for Curt Rice, who was the nation's leading apprentice jockey that year.
